First PCB Help..

Post by retepsnikrep »

I'm a registered user and testing the starter Proteus PCB package to try and layout my first ever PCB!
I have done a few schematics before and got others to do the actual PCB's.

I have attached the project file and would be grateful for any feedback.
The board is a simple two layer 27mm square.
I'm using through hole components as I have loads in stock.

The board seems to have routed OK and there are no DRC errors.
The pre production check seems ok.

I do have a few questions.

I wanted to use smaller 1/8w through hole micro resistors but they don't seem to exist in the library.
Ditto axial ceramic caps that are the same size as the micro resistors.
I wanted to place a 3mm led on the board but again there does not appear to be a PCB footprint for that??
I wanted to change the shape of the pads for pin1 on the three connectors to identify them.

Does the PCB look OK to the gurus on here? What can I do to improve it.
I'm probably looking at getting a small run of 50 made.

Thanks very much for any feedback. Peter

Hi Peter,

Welcome to the World or Proteus!

All footprints are configurable by decomposing them and changing as required, then remaking in to your libraries under a different name. Alternatively if the footprint or device is not in our libraries, you can make your own. May I suggest that you have a read of the "Appendix: Creating new Packages" in the ARES Help Tutorial.

Your project looks fine, other than the entire project is sat outside of the work area. This will affect any output i.e. gerber export.

You also have some terminals that are not wired on the schematic which causes the singular net label warning in the Electrical Rules Checker (ERC).

SINGULAR LABEL: +12V PIN16 (Input)
SINGULAR LABEL: GND PIN5 (Input)
SINGULAR LABEL: H-LINE PIN14 (Input)
SINGULAR LABEL: JOY X (Input)
SINGULAR LABEL: JOY Y OR SLIDER (Input)
SINGULAR LABEL: JOY BUTTON (Input)

Kins regards,
Dave.

Thanks for the reply.

How do I correct this?

I don't understand the origin thing and blue box..

Can i just grab the whole layout and drag it into the blue box which I think is the correct size???

Then get rid of the false origin?

Edit.

I tried this and produced the cadcam files.
In the gerber viewer the blue box is bigger than the pcb??

Hi,
  • Go to Technology Menu > Set Board Properties and make it 50mm x 50mm.
  • Put a false origin at the top left of the box (O on the keyboard).
  • Go to the Output menu > Set Out put origin.
  • Find the centre i.e. coordinate 25x25mm and place the output marker.
  • Move the board in to the work area.
  • Toggle the False origin off by the O key again.
Regards,
Dave.

Thanks. So does this look right now?

The 27mm square board can be placed anywhere in the 50mm square blue box?

Hi Peter,

Looks fine to me. Not sure why you have the un-connected terminals on the schematic, but they're not doing any harm. This is what your board would look like:

Thanks and which is the cheapest PCB option to add to my current package that includes the 3d visualisation?

The starter kit doesn't?

The unconnected terminals are there to show me what input/output the adjacent pin is expecting..

Hi Peter,

You would need to upgrade to PCB Design Level 2. You would pay the price difference between the Level that you have and the Level 2.

Ouch! I will have to stick with the starter PCB version.
Can you send me a quote for that please.

So here we have a second project and I have 5 DRC errors.

I can see where they are and have looked at the DRC tutorial but that is mostly gibberish at the moment. :(

I have tried moving the parts around and rerouting but I get more errors or the same ones remain?

Looking at the errors I'm assuming it is some sort of clearance issue..

Hi,

These errors should be self explanatory, there are tracks touching pads that are not on the same net. I have simply moved the tracks around to make sure they are not touching anything else.

PAD-TRACE = there is a pad too close to a Trace, or visa versa. Fix is to move the trace away from the pad.
RESIST-TRACE = There is a trace overlapping a pads resist (green area around a pad). This can cause solder bridging and cause shorts. Fix is same as above.

I have attached a fixed project.

Regards,
Dave.
